My Story

My Physical Therapy journey started as a young girl when my daredevil stepdad first put the thought into my head, “You know Ash, I think you should really think about it. I think you’re the perfect person for the job.” My stepdad, think Evil Knievel (a retired NYC police detective, ex- bull rider, motorcyclist, and race car driver) had his fair share of injuries and spent plenty of time in physical therapy. As one of my biggest believers and supporters, I couldn’t help but think- maybe he’s right?

Fast forward to 16 years laters… I’m a licensed physical therapist helping people get back to doing what they love.

What do I love about being a Physical Therapist?

Empowering people. Pain, disability, and frustration should not be a life sentence. Experiences have taught me that medical care tends to be reactive rather than proactive, and I want to help change that.

At 18, I headed off to college to pursue becoming a Physical Therapist & play college soccer. Well, it turns out that my journey through physical therapy school was a much smoother one than being a successful college athlete. I had two additional knee surgeries on my same, previously injured knee between freshman and junior year of college. I garnered the nickname “crutch” and spent more time in the trainer’s office than on the field.

Thanks to my never-ending litany of injuries, this is when I realized what sub-par physical therapy is.

Throughout what seemed like the “never-ending” recovery process, I worked with many physical therapists. The unfortunate part… I’m lucky if I can recall any of their names. During my sessions, I mainly worked with an aide who just put me through my exercises. The therapists were too busy taking care of other people. Not once did a physical therapist try to correct me, watch my movement patterns, or re-test my strength. What was the ultimate result? Transitioning from “college athlete” to solely “clipboard holder” my fourth year of college.

My goal is to have you never experience what I did.

I want you to think of your physical therapist as your personal mechanic. We all have that one person on call when a tire goes flat, your radio doesn’t work, or you need an oil change! Why not have your PT on radio stand-by when you strain a muscle or feel a new nerve fire?

Why would I relate our bodies to cars?

I spend a lot of my time around professional race car drivers, motorcycle riders, and extreme sports athletes. When not at a soccer game or track meet, I grew up traveling to auto-racing tracks around the country with my family. Today, I spend a good amount of time traveling to race tracks around the country as I also own a Motorsports Performance Consulting Firm, The Racers Physio.  I listen and hear the stories of racer’s injuries and ailments. Most of them can still function, but they’re not at their best. We can prevent many of these ailments with regular PT tune-ups and avoidance of pills, injections, and questionable surgeries.

As an athlete or non-athlete, there will always be challenges. I and many others in this career have “been there, done that” more than once. It’s one of the biggest reasons we enter this profession.

Keeping you active is my jam. I certainly do not like hearing, “I’ve been told I can never do that again.” Gosh, hearing that really stinks… doesn’t it? I’ve helped a young man who lost his arm and leg on the same-side walk again (with crutches, of course). Never say never! My goal is always to help you conquer your way back to activity.

So, here I am, many years after my collegiate soccer career focusing on my professional career. I want nothing more for clients than not sharing my experiences. Physical Therapy should be a journey to get you back to 110% and nothing short of that. It should empower you to achieve all of your goals.

If you choose to work with me, my emphasis is on YOU.  If an injury has set back your life or athletic endeavors, my goal is to be your mentor through this process. YOU are the mediator of your success when it comes to injury rehabilitation or sports performance. I am only a guide in your journey. From your first visit to your last, I will help you unleash your power to reach your fullest potential. 😊
